Though containing only 800 acres of land, the Devils Postpile National Monument holds a surprising variety of Californian sights. Foremost among these is the Devils Postpile formation, which was created by a volcanic eruption whose basalt lava cooled into a form that looked like columns, followed by glacial movements that polished and exposed the cooled lava shapes. Other sights include the 101-foot drop of Rainbow Falls, the Minaret Falls and other gorgeous Sierra Nevada vistas. Eight miles of hiking trails leads to these locations and fishing is also allowed along the San Joaquin River. The park is a 55-mile drive from the east entrance of Yosemite National Park, past the Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve set on the eastern edge of the state.
Open early Jun - Oct: daily; Closed Nov - early Jun.
Entry fee: Adults $7; Children (3-15) $4; Children 2 and under are free.
